Hay dos tipos de números de sistema autónomo BGP: Privado y Público.
Varios protocolos de enrutamiento utilizan Números de Sistema Autónomo (AS). IANA asigna los números de AS a los Registros Regionales de Internet (RIR). Los cinco RIRs son:
- AFRINIC
- APNIC
- ARIN
- LACNIC
- RIPE_NCC
Los números AS pueden obtenerse en el registro de su región.
